FFXIV maintenance usually runs a few hours, but there is no fixed weekly schedule: Square Enix announces every window ahead of time on the Lodestone maintenance feed. The fastest way to know whether your world is up right now is the live status board, which tracks NA, EU, JP and OCE worlds together.
How long does FFXIV maintenance last?
Most scheduled maintenance is a few hours, and the announcement names the planned end time up front. Major patches and expansion launches run longer - sometimes the better part of a day - because they bring the whole service down to add content. Emergency maintenance after an outage or a bad hotfix tends to be on the shorter side, and Square Enix usually follows up with a "recovery" post when it is done.
The honest answer to "how long is FFXIV maintenance" is: check the window in the notice, then treat it as a guess. Planned times slip. If you are planning around a downtime, assume it runs to the end of the stated window.
When is the next FFXIV maintenance?
FFXIV does not do the weekly Tuesday maintenance most MMOs run. Instead, downtime clusters around patch releases, version updates, and account-side services (Mog Station, the Companion app, the Lodestone itself). Patches land on a cadence Square Enix publishes in advance, so the next maintenance is usually announced days before it happens.
If you see "ffxiv maintenance today" trending, it is almost always one of three things: a patch just dropped, there is an emergency maintenance after an incident, or an account service is down and players are confusing it with the game being down. The Lodestone maintenance feed settles which one it is.
Is maintenance the same for every world?
No. Some maintenance covers all worlds in a region, some is scoped to a single data center or world, and some is account-side entirely. A data center or world-level maintenance means characters on those worlds get disconnected and cannot log back in until it ends, while account-side maintenance can run alongside a live game without kicking anyone out.
That is why the live board shows status per world and per region rather than one giant "the game is down" flag. One data center can be patching while another is completely fine, and a world on the same data center can show a different status from its neighbors.
Patch day vs a sudden outage
Patch day you can usually see coming - the notice is up days ahead, you know your static or your roulettes are getting skipped. Sudden outages are the annoying ones: you are mid dungeon or about to log in for a capped tome window and the world just drops. Both feel identical at the login screen, which is why the board and alerts exist.
We covered the WoW version of this in is WoW down: patch day, Great Vault and server maintenance. Same idea, different game: one failed login does not tell you whether it is you or the realm, but a status change tells you it is not just your connection.
Rather get a ping when your world goes down or comes back? Takes about a minute to set up.
How to check if FFXIV is up right now
Square Enix publishes official status on the Lodestone, and the game client shows login status at the character select screen. For a single page that covers every region, the ServersUp status board polls the official sources and shows each world's current status so you are not opening three tabs during a patch.
Want it to stop being a manual check? Put the worlds you actually play into ServersUp and the alert only fires when status changes - up to down, or down to up - so the channel stays quiet during quiet periods. It is free, and you only subscribe to what you play.
